Rural Development for whom?

“Piye kabare, penak jaman ku toh?” You can easily see the slogan in m any forms, such as stickers, banners, and even trucks decorations. More than twenty years ago Soharto regime fell. Yet, regardless known for his corruption and violation of human rights, some people seemed to miss him and his government. Even some current politicians and political party explicitly praised the Soeharto regime. Why people, particularly those lives in rural area, still loves him? A brief skimming of rural development policies of the post-Soeharto regimes, as reported in this paper, might give a clue. Without dismissing other factors, the current trend and policies in rural development have left the villagers behind. The poverty rate and incidence in rural area, although much lower than in the Soeharto era, are higher than in urban ones.
